An In-Person Adventure with Dr. Scott Homer, OTD, OTR/L

Roll for initiative and discover that learning to read, write, and strategize has never felt like this much of an adventure!

What is Scribe & Sword™?

The world of D&D

Scribe & Sword™ is On Track's version of Dungeons & Dragons™,  a collaborative role-playing game where players step into the identity of a fantastical hero. Together, your group defeats monsters, solves mysteries, and builds shared stories - guided by a Dungeon Master who creates the world and shapes the adventure.

Every session is screen-free, imagination-driven, and genuinely thrilling.

No two adventures are ever the same!

Collaborative Storytelling

Players work together as a team, making decisions, solving problems, and sharing in victories and defeats — there's no "winning" alone.

Guided by a Dungeon Master ("DM")

The DM builds the world, voices the characters, and steers the group — creating an experience tailored to the players.

Rich in Language & Literacy

Reading maps, interpreting spell descriptions, writing in a character journal, narrating your actions out loud — literacy is everywhere.

Your Hero, Your Story

Every player creates a unique character - their species, class, backstory, strengths, and flaws - giving them true creative ownership.

The Learning Beneath the Adventure

Skills Hidden Inside Every Quest

In the hands of an experienced DM and educator, Dr. Scott Homer, D&D becomes a powerful teaching tool. Kids are immersed in real, meaningful skill-building - without ever feeling like they're in a classroom.

Reading

Reading is inherent in the game - and a skilled DM (and Orton-Gillingham certified reading specialist) is certain to seamlessly weave literacy into all game play.

Writing

Players will write throughout gameplay, and time will be given each session to create and add to their Character Logs.  Writing made FUN.

Math

There's a reason players collect dice!

Problem Solving

Players must think several steps ahead before taking action.  There are no wrong actions - just fun.

Planning & Organization

Strategic planning with comrades is always encouraged.

Empathy

Your fellow adventurer may be fatally wounded.  Will you cast the spell to save them?

Resilience

Yes, you might feel like you are beaten...but can you muster the strength to help your friends conquer that fire-breathing dragon?

Emotional Regulation

No one can be certain that their plan will work.  How will you handle it if the dice do not go your way?

Fine Motor Skills

You might be asked to find the hidden elven key hidden in a tiny gem box, or write a Dwarven message.

Turn Taking

Respect for fellow adventurers must be given, even when it is not your turn.   No phones, no screens: adventurers are excited to focus on the game - even when they are anxiously awaiting their turn.

Creativity

YOUR imagination is your only limitation.  Do you want your character to be able to fly?  Talk to animals?  Become invisible?  This is your chance to let your imagination FREE.

Communication

Scribe & Sword™ is a role-playing game.  Once players get the hang of the game, they embrace taking on the characteristics of their characters.  This is when the fun really begins - with laughter and excitement galore.  Conversation is always encouraged within the game and between players.  Lasting friendships bloom here.

Literacy is woven throughout play

Tons of reading, writing, and math are interspersed in gameplay!

D&D cover image gemini.png

Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) is a collaborative role-playing game where players become fantastical heroes, working together to defeat monsters and build shared stories with friends.

Guided by a Dungeon Master (DM), the game naturally fosters teamwork, communication, and creativity. In the hands of a skilled DM and educator, it also becomes a powerful teaching tool - weaving in life skills like problem-solving, planning, empathy, resilience, math, reading, writing, and emotional regulation in a way that feels completely natural.

The result?

An exciting, screen-free adventure full of learning

and laughter.

The Language of D&D

D&D has its own rich vocabulary - ability scores, hit points, initiative, spell slots, and the Dungeon Master's role. Once your child learns this language, they can sit down and play with anyone, anywhere in the world. We introduce the game in a welcoming, low-pressure environment so the rules feel natural and fun, not overwhelming.

Your Child Will Take Home

Their First Character

One of the most meaningful milestones in any player's D&D journey is creating their first character. Who are they? What can they do? What do they want? We walk every child through the full process, so they leave with a completed character they're proud of -and excited to  adventure with, whether that's with friends, a local group, or at the next session.

Two Gifts That Last a Lifetime:

"Playing together with friends becomes an exciting, engaging and rewarding experience where the learning is intrinsic during game play - without stress."
— Adapted from "D&D as a Therapeutic and Learning Tool" by Philip Viljoen

Who This is For

Two Groups - One Epic Summer

Sessions are in-person, small-group, and carefully tailored by age. We keep groups small to encourage relationship building among players, and to ensure that every adventurer gets real support from Scott.

Younger Adventurers

A gentle, playful introduction to D&D designed for younger kids. Less rules, more imagination - with Scott guiding every step to make sure the game feels welcoming and magical right from the start.

Tweens & Older Kids

A richer, deeper dive into the full D&D experience - more complex characters, more intricate storytelling, and the satisfying challenge of learning the game properly so they can play at any table, anywhere.

  • First-time players who've always been curious about D&D but didn't know where to start

  • Kids who already love fantasy, storytelling, or gaming — and want to take it further

  • Reluctant readers and writers who need a different kind of entry point into literacy

  • Kids who struggle in traditional learning settings and thrive with hands-on, immersive experiences

  • Anyone who wants to walk away with a character they created — and the confidence to keep playing
